Subas Dhakal, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of physics, has been awarded an XSEDE/NSF research grant (Award no: PHY140044) to study the self-assembly of lithocholic acid (LCA), a primary bile acid synthesized by liver in the human body. The primary function of bile acids is to allow digestion of dietary fats and oils by acting as a Surface active agents that emulsifies them into "micelles." Dr. Dhakal and his research team will use computer simulations using the XSEDE GPU (Graphic Processing Units) computing resources to understand the self-assembly of various bile acids and the mechanics of the resulting structures.
Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) is supported by National Science Foundation grant number OCI-1053575.
