A newly described plant fossil has been named Syrinxichnus tanneri in honor of Larry Tanner, Ph.D., of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. Paleontologist Spencer Lucas named the fossil after Tanner "to honor his many contributions to our knowledge of Triassic–Jurassic geology and paleontology." The fossil is described in the article, Rhizoliths and the Recognition of Plant and Microbial Trace Fossils, in the journal Geosciences. The fossil is a type of plant root that occurs in rocks of Late Triassic age in northwestern New Mexico. The genus name, Syrinxichnus is from the Greek for "tube trace". The article can be found here.
