Shukri Mohamed, student success coach at Le Moyne College, recently published the article “Symbol of Defiance: Cultural Reclamation and Resilience in the Symbolism of the Watermelon” in Gatherings, Volume 3, Issue 2 (2026).
The article examines the watermelon as a symbol of cultural identity, resistance, and reclamation in both Palestinian and African-American contexts. Drawing on postcolonial theory, intersectionality, transnational feminism and visual cultural critique, the article explores how marginalized communities can reclaim everyday cultural symbols and transform them into expressions of collective identity, resilience and resistance. The research highlights the connections between these histories and considers how cultural symbols can foster solidarity across geographic and cultural boundaries.
