A. Purpose
The Carhart Study Abroad Curricular Development Fund is designed to support faculty who wish to develop short-term study abroad courses involving student travel outside of the United States.
B. Terms
Generated from the Carhart Endowment Fund, the Carhart Study Abroad Curricular Development Fund has been created in the amount of $39,023. The intention is to have these funds last for ten academic years, beginning in 2016-2017.
Therefore, up to three Carhart Study Abroad Curricular Development Stipends will be awarded each academic year. Each successful applicants will receive a $1000 stipend and can apply for additional support of up to $1500 for travel, books, etc. connected to his or her project.
Examples of appropriate projects and related costs include:

development of a new short-term study abroad course;

revision of an existing short-term study abroad course;

acquisition of relevant research materials, such as books and journal subscriptions;

travel to sites directly related to a short-term study abroad course under development, including research at libraries and other cultural centers;

other relevant research as approved by the committee on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants should be guided by the question: What difference will this short-term study abroad course make for my teaching and for student experiences? The feasibility of the proposed short courses will also be considered.
C. Eligibility
Any full-time Le Moyne College faculty member wishing to develop or revise a short-term study abroad course involving student travel outside of the United States is eligible to apply.
D. Application Process
A full application consists of a completed application form together with all supporting material requested on the form. Applications should be submitted via email attachments to

E. Evaluation Criteria
In addition to the merits of the proposal, the applicant’s history with Research and Development programs will be considered.
Preference is given to applicants who have not previously received Carhart Study Abroad Curricular Stipends.
F. Report
Each recipient of a Carhart Study Abroad Curricular Stipend must submit a brief report to the Chair of the Committee (
[email protected]), the Provost, and the appropriate dean no later than six months after receiving the funds.
Specific Instructions
The applicant should combine cover form and project information into a single file (along with any supporting documentation he or she chooses to include) and submit as a single e-mail attachment [email protected]. The chair/program director should separately complete and submit the form described below.

2. Project information

Working title for the project.

Full description of the project (including goals of the project and its current status). This description should make clear the connection between the project and the purpose of the Carhart Study Abroad Curricular Stipend program, i.e., an explanation of the benefits to Le Moyne College faculty and students.

Applicant’s qualifications for pursuing the project.

Applicant’s history with Research and Development programs or other College sources of additional support (e.g., endowed professorships, release time).

It is the responsibility of applicant at time of application to demonstrate compliance with all relevant college policies (e.g., Institutional Review Board, Information Technology).

Budget, if applying for additional support of up to $1500 for travel, books, etc. connected to the project, including justification of those expenses.

Department chair (and, if relevant, program director) must complete a brief form indicating whether the proposed short-term course is consistent with department/program planning needs, as well as whether the faculty member developing the course is available for any proposed travel during the subsequent six months. The Carhart Study Abroad Curricular Development Stipends are paid through the College payroll office and are reported as taxable income to the IRS.
