McDevitt Distinguished Chair in Information Systems Martha Grabowski, Ph.D.,  was appointed as a member of an 18-month National Academies of Science, Engineering & Medicine consensus study for the U.S. Congress that will inform public policies concerning the possession and consumption of alcohol by crew members and other personnel aboard U.S. commercial vessels. The assessment will consider the human factors and safety culture issues, among others, associated with the use of alcohol and other intoxicants in conjunction with alcohol in the wake of notable maritime accidents and incidents that impact national and global safety, security and environmental protection. The study will conclude with a briefing to Congress and other research, safety and transportation system stakeholders in Fall 2025.
