Patrick Lawler, writer in residence for Le Moyne's Creative Writing Program, participated in the 2021 conference (Emergence/y) for the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment. He was part of a conference stream “The Pluriverse Stream,” which included many of the authors featured in the anthology Poetics for the More-than-Human World. Lawler’s performance/reading titled “Inadvertent Criticality—Before Fukushima” considers the nuclear accident at the uranium-processing plant in Tokaimura, Japan. Delivered in a hazmat suit, the work critiques the complicity among our governments, industry officials, our consumerist culture and individuals through their choices to deny the consequences of our actions—all in a lyrical, ironic manner--and with a glass of wine.
