Chandan Jha, Ph.D., the John K. Purcell ’65 Endowed Chair in Finance at Le Moyne College, and co-authors published an article studying the effects of banking expansion on domestic violence in India. The article, which appeared in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organizations, shows that banking expansion led to a reduction in domestic violence. The authors argue, and empirically show, that the underlying reason behind this association household's improved ability to make more wedding gifts (often known as dowry) and more educated women, leading to better spouse quality.
