In a world where we are constantly connected, cybersecurity cannot be limited to the home or office. When you’re traveling— whether domestic or international—it is always important to practice safe online behavior and take proactive steps to secure Internet-enabled devices. Be Cyber Smart and use these tips to connect with confidence while on the go.

  • Remember physical security. Do not leave your device unattended in public or easily accessible areas. Avoid connecting your device to any computer or charging station that you do not control, such as a charging station at an airport terminal.

  • Limit what information you post on social media. What many people don’t realize is that these seemingly random details are all that criminals need to know to target you, your loved ones, and your physical belongings—online and in the real world.

  • Keep software up to date. If the vendor releases updates for the software operating your device, install them as soon as possible.

  • Double your login protection. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to ensure that the only person who has access to your account is you.

  • Turn off Bluetooth when not in use. Cyber criminals have the capability to pair with your device's open Bluetooth connection and steal personal information.

  • Be cautious of public Wi-Fi networks. Follow these recommendations when connecting to any public wireless hotspot—like on an airplane or in an airport, hotel, train/bus station, or café.

    • Confirm the name of the network and exact login procedures with appropriate staff to ensure that the network is legitimate.

    • Do not conduct sensitive activities, such as online shopping, banking, or sensitive work, using a public wireless network.

    • Only use sites that begin with “https://” when online shopping or banking. Using your mobile network connection is generally more secure than using a public wireless network.
